I was raised in agnostic or atheist environmental. Not really sure there is a difference. We never went to church, never talked about God, never prayed before meals or bedtime. We just lived our life. Then when I was around 12 or maybe 11, something transformational happened to my mother. An experience like Paul had on the road to Damascus, perhaps. I don’t know the details. I just know all of a sudden we found a church home. A UMC church home. I started confirmation class, was confirmed and baptized there and started attending MYF pretty regularly. I didn’t really know what the big deal was all about but I had fun and kind of enjoyed the social aspects of things. Wouldn’t say any deep spiritual roots had taken hold in my preadolescent heart, though. That’s about the time that my already fragile mental health took a nose dive and I decided I was fat and must lose weight. In the span of 7 or 8 months I lost about 30% of my body weight and ended up at Duke University almost at the point of death. We live 4 hours away from Duke and my mother, single mother barely scraping by, had to quit her job as a nurse to help save my life. She drove hours and hours back and forth to participate in therapy and attend to other things that were needed. I don’t know how we didn’t lose our house. But getting back to the church question. This new church we had been a part of for less than a year ROSE UP for me and for my mother and sister! As the fellow congregants watched me every week becoming thinner and thinner, rather than withdraw and whisper behind me and my mother’s backs, they enveloped me with love. Constantly approaching me to ask how they could help, constantly coming to see me, send me cards, but even more importantly they way they loved on my poor mother, well......I can’t even explain it. When I was admitted to the hospital and in some significant medical danger, the church organized a 24 hour prayer vigil for me where for a period of 24 hours someone from that congregation was on their knees at the altar rail of that sanctuary praying for me. Do you know how unbelievable that is? Most of them didn’t know me all that well, maybe not all. But they were there and let me tell you the SHOWED UP FOR JESUS and I will never forget the love. Ever. I know God led my mom to this very church in the months leading up to my illness. This is why I am a united Methodist.
